Sara Digiovanni Methvin passed away on June 28, 2024 in Natchitoches Louisiana after a brief illness surrounded by her family. Digi, as she was known, was born to Antonio and Josephine Digiovanni on December 18, 1936 in Shreveport Louisiana as the youngest of 7 children. Growing up on a vegetable farm, she learned the value of hard work and pride in her family. She graduated from Byrd High school in 1954 and Louisiana Tech University in 1958.
While working in Natchitoches, Digi met the love of her life Kenneth Orin Methvin, whom she married on February 8, 1964. Their marriage lasted 54 years until his death on June 18, 2017. Having lost her mother at an early age, she developed a close relationship with her mother in law Clotilde Methvin with whom she shared many laughs. Sara and Kenneth had four boys, Kenneth Karlton, Timothy Lane, Jason Orin and Gerard Anthony. She spoiled them all. Digi took great joy in cooking large meals for her family and the field hands of the family farm. Digi could cook anything from any cookbook, but her greatest recipes the Italian dishes that were passed down to her from Papa Tony. These were kept in her heart and never written down. She was a steadfast supporter of St. Marys Catholic school and attended as many school activities she could for over 40 years. She was also a member of the Service League and became a sustainer.
Along with her family, Digi’s greatest joy was the Mass. She was a member of the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and was a daily Communicant. She was also a regular attendant at , St. Anthony of Padua and Holy Cross Catholic Churches. But she had a special place in her heart for the Chapel at St. Mary’s Catholic School where she made a special point of sharing Mass with her grandchildren, John William, Maggie, Makenzie and Meredith. In her later years, she would often say that she thanked God everyday for the opportunity to go to mass for so many years because she knew one day that she would no longer be able to do so. Sara loved Jesus and His Mother Mary with all of her heart, but had a special devotion to “poor St. Joseph” who she thought was often overlooked.
Digi is predeceased by her loving husband Kenneth Methvin, her parents Antonio and Josephine Digiovanni, her brothers and sisters Victor, Michael, Peter, Conrad, Josie, Lena, Francis, and Nick.
Digi is survived by Karlton Methvin and his wife Lisa, Timothy Methvin and his wife Elizabeth, Jason Methvin and his wife Holly and Gerard Methvin. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, John William Methvin and his wife Ashleigh, Maggie Methvin, Makenzie Methvin, and Meredith Methvin. Digi was also blessed to see her great grandchildren Violet and Juliet. She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces, extended family and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at The Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Msgr. Scott Chemino and Rev. Irion St. Romain serving as concelebrants. Entombment will follow the Mass at the Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 8:30 am until 10:40 am at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home on Tuesday the 2nd.
The family would like to thank every bishop, priest, deacon or religious who nurtured her faith along the way during her lifetime and Eucharistic ministers Dr. Cissy Picou and Mrs. Elaine Bacon who faithfully brought her Communion when she could not make it to Mass. We would also like to thank Carolyn Carpenter for her faithful service to our mother; as well as Donna Jackson, Cheryl Dixon, Ruby Efferson, and Shae Braxton for the love and care they showed her.
In lieu of flowers the family would ask that you make donations to the Restoration Fund of the Minor Basillica of the Immaculate Conception and to St. Mary’s Catholic School.
