After retirement, he served as interim pastor at Trinity Baptist Church in Natchitoches, Fairview Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church Provencal. He “retired” again in June of 2014, near his 75th birthday.

Brother Bruce is preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Willard and Pinkye Mitchell; brothers Charles, Keith, Kerry, and sister Glenda Davis. He is survived by his loving wife Nita, three sons Randy and wife Lee Ann of Vine Grove, Kentucky; Dennis Mitchell and wife Karen of Auburn, Alabama, and Darron Mitchell and wife Christy of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and 7 grandchildren Bryan Mitchell, Kyle Mitchell and wife Michaela, Jenna Mitchell Fritz and husband Jake, Joshua Mitchell and wife Lauren, Abby Mitchell, Matthew Mitchell and Andrew Mitchell.
