Peggy Bankston Fisher

Peggy Bankston Fisher, 66, passed away in her home in Natchitoches, LA on May 4, 2020. She was born November 6, 1953 in Alexandria, LA. Peggy lived much of her life in Natchitoches. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Peggy was blessed with incredible musical talent and she filled her life with music. Whether you heard her sing at church, on stage in a musical, in the classroom, or in the “big room” of her parents’ home, it was always extraordinary. When she played the piano or guitar, the music was full of emotion. She sang and played beautifully despite only having hearing in one ear. Peggy was also a history buff and loved to travel to historical sites as well as the beach. After years of directing church choirs in both Louisiana and Texas, Peggy found her true passion in teaching. She taught music (and sometimes fine arts and English) at Natchitoches Central High School for 20 years. She dedicated to life to her students and was especially proud of the students in the school’s honor choir, NCHOIR (which she founded and directed). Peggy was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church. She was a volunteer at Los Adaes in Robeline and Hodges Gardens State Park. She served as Secretary of the Lesche Club of Natchitoches and was a member of the Friends of the Natchitoches Parish Library. Peggy was also a zumba enthusiast. Whatever group she was a part of, she supported with her heart and soul. Peggy is survived by her brother Larry Fisher and his partner Linda Applegate of Hilton Head, SC; nieces Laurie Fisher and husband Jason Tennis of Boston, MA, Leslie Bley and husband Kevin of Austin, TX, and Lindsay McCain and husband Corey of Atlanta, GA; and grandnephews and grandnieces Ethan, Ezra, Riley, Claire and Cole. Peggy was predeceased by her beloved parents Jack and Mary Catherine Fisher, brother Jack Fisher II and her grandparents Charles and Lorena Williams. She was also predeceased by the many cats she loved and cared for over the years. Memorial donations can be made to Friends of Animals (www.friendsofanimals.org) or the American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org). There will be a celebration of Peggy’s life held at a later date.
