Nona Nelms Bobo

A Funeral Mass honoring the life of Nona Nelms Bobo will be held June 14, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Celebrants will be Father Derek Ducote, Father Louis Sklar, and Deacon John Whitehead. Burial will follow at Providence Cemetery in Ringgold, Louisiana. Visitation will be held on June 13, 2021 from 5:00-7:00pm at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home. Nona was born October 19, 1929 to John Long and Creola Cooke Nelms in Montgomery, Louisiana. She passed away June 9, 2021 in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where she had resided since 1972. Nona graduated from Montgomery High School in 1946, then attended Virginia Intermont College for Girls for one year. She graduated from Northwestern State College in 1952, and later went back to Northwestern for a degree in Library Science. She married William I. Bobo, Jr. on May 1, 1954 and they were married for 37 years, until his death in 1991. They lived in Ringgold, Louisiana until William’s job tranfer to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1966. The family returned to Louisiana in 1972 and settled in Natchitoches. Nona began her teaching career in Colfax, Louisiana in 1952, but it was at St. Mary’s School in Natchitoches that she found her teaching home. She first taught 6th grade and later became the school’s librarian. She retired at the age of 79 after 37 years of service at St. Mary’s and was recognized for her long service and many activities sponsored; her picture hangs in the St. Mary’s wall of honor. She was a member of the Minor Basilica of Immaculate Conception, and was active in Catholic Daughters, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Natchitoches Regional Medical Center Guild. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, her parents, 3 brothers, Everette, Irving, and Charles, and infant sister, Laverne, and a nephew, John L. Nelms. Left to cherish her memory are her children, William I. Bobo and wife Cathy, and Lisa Glasgow and husband Richard. She was Mimi to her grandchildren Aimee Faist and husband Chris, Jason Bobo, Cailyn Bobo, Christian Bobo, and great-grandchildren Quinn and Cameron Faist, along with several loving nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. John Hogg for his many years of care, as well as Highland CCU/ Stepdown and Courtyard of Natchitoches for their care during her final weeks. The family also expresses deep gratitude to Nona’s sitters: Classie Barber, Joyce Robinson, Brenda Williams, Mikayla Newton, Tara Reliford, and Evelyn Pike. Special thanks to her wonderful friends: Anne and Ed Giering, Ann Hare, Beverly McCormick, and Dianne Vienne. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s School or the Minor Basilica of Immaculate Conception. Nona was an inspiration to many people and will be greatly missed.
