Lewis Carl Hines

September 3, 1941 — July 16, 2023

Natchitoches

Lewis Carl Hines was born September 3, 1941 in Many Louisiana to Alice Walker Hines and LJ Hines. He was the third of 7 children, including Marylyn, LJ, Frank, Jimmy, Ralph and Laureen. He was married twice and has a daughter, Holly Hines and granddaughter, Harlow Hines from his first marriage to Margaret McElroy Hines. He had an additional 5 grandchildren he loved dearly including, Courtney Dumond Clements, Penny Sample, Zachary Dumond, Cameron Dumond and Briana Sample. The family is incredibly grateful to Cheryl Sawyer Dixon for taking such wonderful care of him over the last few years.

Lewis was proud of his time in the National Guard and as an Army Reservist. Recruited by NASA to be a theoretical mathematician, he chose to stay close to family and started his CPA practice with his brother Frank Hines in 1971. He was a member of the Louisiana Society of CPA's and the American Institute of CPA's for over 50 years.

Lewis was a proud alumni of Northwestern State University and an active participant in fundraising and volunteering his services to the University. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Rotary Club, JC Club, and Treasurer of Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce for approximately 12 years.

Lewis was a pillar in the community and was known for his generous support of other local businesses and families. He always had a kind word and was known for his incredible work ethic. His clients across North West Louisiana and North East Texas were never surprised to see him arrive first thing in the morning and stay until he got the job done. He was known for discreetly helping others, whether it was “investing” in a new small business, tithing to multiple churches or helping with a child’s tuition.

Lewis was an avid fitness fan and could be seen walking the NSU track or at his local gym. In his younger years, he enjoyed snow skiing and planned annual trips to Colorado to enjoy the slopes. He also loved dancing and was known to have a mean jitter bug. He graduated from his square dancing class the night before his daughter was born and was an active member of the Square dancing club for many years.

Lewis was incredibly intelligent and it could be seen in his wry sense of humor. As a boy, he was known for his mischievous nature and carried that glint in his eye through his life.

He had planned to hike the Appalachian Trail when he retired but unfortunately a series of strokes interfered with that dream.

He was proud of his community.  He was incredibly loved and will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life will be held on his birthday September 3rd.  Visitors who would like to pay respects are invited from 3-5p.  Family will hold a private ceremony afterwards.  Please reach out if you’d like further information.
