Judith "Judy" Elaine Hubley Sluppick

November 29, 1938 — November 7, 2020

Judith “Judy” Elaine (Hubley) Sluppick of Natchitoches, Louisiana, passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 81 years old. Born in Natchitoches, Louisiana on November 29, 1938 to her parents, Lawrence and Marjorie Hubley. Judy grew up and flourished in Natchitoches. She graduated from Natchitoches High School in 1956 and was a member of the high school band. Miss Judy was a sister of the Tri Sigma Sorority, and also honored as “The Rose of Sigma Tau Gamma”. The tradition of Miss Merry Christmas began in 1956 when Miss Judy, a 17-year-old Natchitoches high school senior was selected to represent the annual Christmas festival for the “City of Lights”. She was chosen because of her “great set of legs”. Judy’s grandmother made her a red costume trimmed in white fur that accentuated her long dancer’s legs – a trait from her mother, Marjorie. Her responsibilities as Miss Merry Christmas were to ride in the festival parade and to promote the Christmas festival on the radio. This tradition continues today. Judy enjoyed riding in the festival parade every year and was proud of her title as The Very First Miss Merry Christmas. After graduating from Northwestern University in 1959, she went on to teach elementary school for 30 years, and was a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization. Judy raised two sons, Chip and Darrell, with her first husband, Ray Jones. After her teaching career, she discovered another passion of hers, a spiritual calling to minister to young women. She was the Executive Director of the Crisis Pregnancy Center for 13 years, now known as the Women’s Resource Center, a non-profit organization. Alongside fellow volunteers, she was dedicated to educating and empowering young women to make informed decisions for themselves and their unborn babies during unplanned pregnancies. She provided support during a time of need – She spoke love and life into countless young women. Judy, who took after her mother, had a deep love for music and dancing. She grew up dancing at her mother's dance studio and they would perform together. Judy was also a member of the Modern Dance Club. Judy’s son, Chip, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident in January of 1990. Before Chip died, he had submitted an ad into the American Iron Magazine, searching for fellow bikers to join a Christian bikers club with him. George Scott Sluppick, a Vietnam War Veteran, of Memphis, Tennessee, read and responded to Chip’s ad not knowing that Chip had since passed. Judy received and read George's letter to Chip and was moved by his words. She responded to him to inform him of Chip's passing. This sparked a friendship and they began exchanging letters. George helped Judy to heal and they fell in love. George moved to Natchitoches to be with Judy, and they were married later that year in October 1990. George and Judy were married for 25 years until his passing in 2016. Judy loved dogs and worked with local rescue groups, giving many dogs a loving home - Scooter, Buddy, Romeo, Wendel, and Trey. Judy was a born-again Christian and was strong in her faith. A true pillar of the community. Judy is loved and cherished by all of her family and friends, and will forever be remembered as the fearless and elegant lady that she was. The family is comforted knowing that she is healed now and reunited with the love of her life, George, and her son, Chip, and she is dancing in Heaven with her mother. Waiting to welcome her were her son, “Chip” Stuart Anthony Jones, her husband, George Scott Sluppick, her mother, Marjorie Blanchard, her father, Lawrence Hubley, and her grandparents, Oscar and Bonnie Haworth. She is survived by her siblings, Mike Allday (Wendy), Sandra Hastings, sons, Darrell Jones, George Sluppick, her daughters, Dawne Woods (Bryan), Audra May (Chris), Laura Bishop (Scott), her grandchildren, Chelsea Joy (Sean), Hannah Grace Woods, Jessica Roach, Zachary Bishop, Keegan Woods, and her great-granddaughter, Olivia Joy. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to Ida Moody, Kinshanna Fontenot and Jeannie Colbert for all the love and care they provided Judy. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 1:00 pm at Freedom Life Church of Natchitoches, LA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Women’s Resource Center or your local animal shelter.
