Jimmy Herman Sheffield, 80, a resident of Natchitoches, Louisiana, passed away on August 16, 2020, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was born April 1, 1940 in Cordele, Georgia to the late Monroe and Willie Pearl Culpepper Sheffield. Jimmy was predeceased by his sister, Peggy Sheffield. Jimmy will be remembered by wife, Joan Sheffield of Natchitoches, La.; sons, Justin Sheffield of Kingwood, Tx., James (Jennifer) Sheffield of Natchitoches, La., Jay (Cindy) Sheffield of Natchitoches, La., John (Jennifer) Sheffield of Glen Ellyn, Il.; daughters, Jerri (Daniel) Lloyd of St. Croix, VI, Jacqueline (Sam) Hume of Fort Worth, Tx., Julie (Sigmund) Tengesdal of Trophy Club, Tx.; brother, Thomas Sheffield of Donalsonville, Ga. He will be dearly missed by life-long best friend and traveling buddy, Bob Assef of Gloster, La.; his precious grandchildren, Blair Lloyd, Bella Lloyd, Gannon Sheffield, Avery Katherine Sheffield, Elizabeth Autrey, Kayla Hume, Morgan Gray, Hunter Gray, Paul Sheffield, Natalie Sheffield, Brett Spera, Trooper Spera and Jex Sheffield. After graduation from Crisp County High, Jimmy attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia, where he was the President of the Forestry Club and played for the baseball team. He later transferred to the University of Georgia, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and participated in the Forestry Club, was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, Xi Sigma Pi, an international honor society for Forestry and formed his life-long love for the ‘DAWGS. Jimmy began his career in forestry in 1963 with Continental Can Company in Zwolle, Louisiana. He was a member of the Army National Guard from 1962-1966. He was a member of the Lions Club, Louisiana Forestry Association, Piney Woods Forestry Group, Louisiana Jaycees and the Society of American Foresters. He was listed in the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1970 and 1974’s Who’s Who in Louisiana. He also put in many years as a Little League coach in Sabine Parish. A known successful forester in the industry, Jimmy was featured by Willamette in their 2000 Annual report for his responsible stewardship in timber harvesting. Jimmy will be fondly remembered for his love of his family, his work ethic, his long-standing love of all sports, coaching, his Dawgs, and his immense gardens (as he would call it ‘family bonding time’). A Memorial Mass in Jimmy’s honor will be held Saturday, August 29, 2020 at 10am, at The Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Natchitoches, La.
