Helen Schelette Newsom

Helen Schelette Newsom was born on December 5, 1930, in Flora, Louisiana to Willie and Mabel Schelette.  She passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, at her sister's home, surrounded by her loved ones. 

A devoted educator, Helen dedicated over 40 years of her life to teaching at West Monroe High School, impacting countless students with her passion and commitment to education.  In 2005, Helen made the meaningful decision to move to Natchitoches to be closer to her family, a reflection of her strong family ties and love for those dear to her.

She is survived by her sister, Eunive Schelette Trahan; nieces, Gail Culpepper and Jo Nell Woo and her husband Steve; and a nephew, Michael Trahan.

Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Curtis Newsom; her brothers, Ervin Schelette and Joe Schelette; and her sister, Oma Schelette Solice.

Helen's legacy of teaching and her love for family will be cherished by all who knew her. Entombment services will be held at 11 am on March 4, 2026, at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, LA.
