Mattie "Avis" Megason Johnson, 100, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving family in Palestine, Texas.
Avis was born December 5, 1923, to Marvin L. Megason, Sr. and Ethel L. Place Megason in Marthaville, Louisiana; the fifth of 11 children. She graduated from Marthaville High School in 1940, later moving on her own to Houston, Texas. During World War II, Avis contributed to the war effort by working at Hughes Tools as a metal lathe operator.
In 1949, Avis met O.B. Johnson in Houston, discovering that they'd grown up only 10 miles from each other in Louisiana. After a whirlwind courtship of only 6 weeks, they married and went on to celebrate 55 years together, before O.B. passed away in 2004. They spent their golden retirement years back near their home places in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.
Together they had three sons, Barry, Layne, and Corey. Avis was also the proud grandmother of three grandsons, Brett, Zach, and Theo.
Avis's favorite past times were her vegetable garden and fishing with her husband. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Known for her warm heart and quick smile, Avis will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Avis is survived by her children and grandchildren: son Barry Johnson, wife Cat and grandson Theo; son Layne Johnson, wife Sondra, and grandson Brett; and son Corey, wife Shannon, and grandson Zach. Avis is also survived by her brother Kenny Megason and sister-in-law Pat, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members and friends.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the wonderful people at Legacy at Town Creek for 10 years of loving care, as well as Heart to Heart Hospice for their compassionate care over the last several months and in her final days.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday December 14, at 1:00 PM at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home. Visitation will precede the service at 12 Noon the same day.
Avis will be laid to rest next to her husband in Central Cemetery in Robeline, LA.
