Alonza Earnest Morgan, 91 years old of Natchitoches, LA, entered into eternal rest July 11, 2022 in Shreveport, LA. Earnest was born May 4, 1931 in Junction City, LA. to Alonza and Jessie Morgan. Earnest graduated from Campti High School in 1950 and joined the United States Air Force where he was a staff sergeant. Returning home, he married his lovely wife, Sue Walters. Earnest later attended Northwestern State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree in Upper Elementary/ Health and P.E and also completed his Master of Education Degree and +30. From 1959-1967, Earnest served as a teacher and coach at Provencal and Marthaville High School. He then served his time as principal from 1967-1987 at Ashland, Robeline and Campti High School. In 1987, he entered retirement, but still served two consecutive terms on the Executive Committee for LHSAA. January of 1990, he received the Distinguished Service Award for LHSAA. Loving education the way he did, he came out of retirement to serve for one year as principal at Riverdale Academy 1994-1995. After 36 years of doing what he loved, teaching and coaching, the final school bell would ring. Earnest was not only active in the education system, he was also involved in other things in the community. Some of these duties included Director of Little League Baseball for the City of Natchitoches from 1956-1970. He coached the American Legion Baseball from 1965-1974, successfully reaching the state playoffs numerous years. Lastly, he was Director of NYC Federal Summer Program for Natchitoches Parish. Throughout his career in the school system, he was able to mentor and touch several athletes’ lives. He was commonly known as “Coach” to many. Being an athlete himself, he used his knowledge and love for the game to make an impact on others. “Coach,” has left memories of football, basketball and baseball in the hearts of many of his players, but baseball was always his passion. He also was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing and hunting. He could easily be found at the camp or on the boat at any given time. Lastly, Earnest enjoyed caring for his cattle on his farm and occasionally riding horses when he had spare time. His farm was his second home, and he loved every moment spent there. Earnest is survived by his daughter Suzanne M. Cotton and husband Donald, son Gary Morgan and wife Coy and son Chris Morgan. He is blessed with five grandchildren; Josh Cotton and fiancé Laura Sklar, Morgan C. Rhodes and husband Logan, Maghen C. Bell and husband Hayden, Makenzie Morgan and Kamryn Morgan. As well as four great grandchildren; Mia Rhodes, Leighton “LuLu” Rhodes, Audrey Bell and Easton Bell. And his twin brother Earl Morgan. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Sue Morgan, his son William Kevin Morgan, parents Alonza & Jessie Morgan, his brother Howard Morgan and sisters Mildred Creamer and Doris Whitstine. Services are under the direction of Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home in Natchitoches, LA. The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm on Monday July 18, 2022 at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on July 19, 2022, at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Campti, LA with Father Louis Sklar and Father John Cunningham officiating. Interment will follow the services at Memory Lawn Cemetery in Natchitoches, La. Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Bobby Dean Birdwell, Mervin Birdwell, Wade Bynog, Dennis Choate, Skeeter Henry, Rickey Primm, Delbert Thompson, Tommy Vercher, Donnie Watkins, and Stuart Wright. Honorary pallbearers are all of his former players. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Memorial & Honor Program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
