Hammond Hassan

Family and friends of Hammond Hassan will gather to celebrate his life on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at 10 AM in the Blanchard St. Denis Chapel with Rev. Jacob Thomas officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery at Cloutiervlle, La. Visitation will be Monday, September 18, 2006 from 5 PM until 9 PM with a rosary service at 7:30 PM and on September 19, 2006 from 8 AM until service time in the funeral home. Mr. Hassan, 76, of Melrose, La., died Friday, September 15, 2006, at Michael E. Debakey V. A. Medical Center in Houston, Texas He was born in Trout, La on December 23, 1929, the fifth child to Cordelia Barnes and George Hassan. He graduated from Trout-Goodpine High School in Trout, La. He was an outstanding student and basketball athlete. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. After his military service he enrolled at Northwestern State College and received a B.A. degree in Math and Education, and a Masters plus 30 hours in Guidance, Math, and Education. He began his career as a teacher and taught in several parishes, including Natchitoches. There he was promoted to Principal at Cloutierville High School, then to Natchitoches Parish School Board Office as Transportation Director until his retirement in l978. Not only was he an educator, he was a politician, serving Ward 4 as Justice of the Peace for twenty plus years. Hammond was an admired leader in Natchitoches Parish activities and has touched the lives of many people, some have gone on to be leaders in our country. He held local and state offices in the Elks Lodge (B.P.O.E. #1363), and was elected President of Natchitoches Parish Teachers Association in l965. The outdoors was his love, there he was an avid hunter and fisherman. His dog, "T-Bone" was always at his side. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Lund Hassan; parents, George Hassan and Cordelia Barnes Hassan; brothers, Iba Hassan and Dempsey Hassan; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Felix Roge;' and Viola Airhart Roge'; brothers-in-law, Joseph N. Roge', Sr. and Harold W. Roge', Sr. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ernestine Roge' Hassan of Melrose, La.; one daughter, Carla Jean Hassan-Williams and husband Casey of San Marcos, Tx.; three sons, Rev. William Hammond Hassan, Jr. and wife Nora of Marthaville, La., Darryl George Hassan of Derry, La., and Alan Roge' Hassan of Plano, Tx.; grandchildren, Thomas 'Toby' B. Hassan, Eric Hasssan and wife Lonna, Sgt. Zachary William Hassan (U.S.A.F.) and wife Jennifer, Jeremiah R. Hassan and wife Chasity, Georgette Nichole Hassan, Dempsey Roge' Williams, Ashton Roge' Hassan, Liam Shawn Williams; great-grandchildren, Catlin, Makenna, Harley, Lauren, and Emily, Hayden, and Tyler Hassan; two sisters, Ruth Hassan Kochinski of Trout, La. and Maxine Hassan Leckband of Lake Charles, La. Pallbearers will be Sam Nelken, Eric J. Hassan, Zachary William Hassan, Jeremiah R. Hassan, W.T. 'Bill' Rathburn, Jr., and John A. Rathburn. Honorary pallbearers will be W. Eugene Ainsworth, Charles N. Roge', F. Louis Roge', Edgar C. Roge', Thomas 'Toby' B. Hassan, Eulas 'Mann'; Rachal. He was an avid worker with a keen interest and many talents, a sympathetic and bemused personality whose fascination with details of everyday life was an inspiration to family and friends alike. To remember the man who made many futures possible and who prepared minds to be filled with powerful knowledge and memories. As he prepared the way for others, let us prepare the way for our youth. Thank you Hammond, what a blessing you have been in our lives.
